Autism Spectrum Disorder

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a broad range of neurological and developmental conditions that affect an individual's social communication, behavior, and interests. The "spectrum" refers to the wide variation in how individuals with ASD experience and express symptoms, which can range from mild to severe.

ASD is categorized into different levels of support based on the severity of symptoms and the degree of assistance required.

At CBPNY we focus on supporting individuals with high-functioning autism (Level 1). Children with ASD level 1 often face challenges in navigating social dynamics, social communication, and behaviors, which can make it difficult to engage with peers effectively. At CBPNY, we utilize tools such as social pragmatics, social stories, and CBT techniques to help improve the ability to understand, navigate, and interact in social situations. Furthermore, many children may not meet the full diagnostic criteria for ASD but still struggle with related social and emotional challenges. Therapy can help enhance social skills, interpersonal relationships, and emotional regulation, regardless of whether a formal ASD diagnosis is present.

Additionally, many children with ASD experience co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, OCD, and depression. We adapt traditional CBT practices to better suit the unique ways the autistic mind processes information. By tailoring our approach, we help children and adults build the skills they need to manage their symptoms and enhance their social and emotional well-being.
